Booster courses for potential ITE students

With the demise of the TDA sponsored booster course there is still a need for candidates for PGCE course to obtain subject knowledge before commencing their course. There are several routes that are available:

Oxford Brookes offer modules as part of their distance learning BA course. These can be studied before embarking on the PGCE course. Each module is about 150 hours of study (3 weeks) and costs £195. More details from the Oxford Brookes website, or click here for a list of modules.
REonline and TeachRE is now offering a Subject Knowledge Booster Course to graduates. It enables those graduates without sufficient specialist knowledge to meet the expectations of trainers to have the required level of knowledge and understanding of the main belief traditions in the UK, as well as some understanding of its use in the classroom. The course is a distance learning on-line package with structured tasks which will involve tutorial support from the TeachRE team and current PGCE trainers. Course time is flexible, but it is anticipated it can be completed in a month. The cost is £100 for standard level, and £150 if additional subject knowledge support is required. The Open University's "Introduction to Religions of the World" course is an excellent course to develop your subject knowledge of the six living religious traditions that have had – and continue to have – a major influence on world affairs: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. This is a 60 point level 2 qualification which involves a number of assignments and an examination. Cost is £630. More about the course and the course website.
The Keswick Hall Trust runs an "About Religions" bridging progamme. The course comprises a knowledge audit, plus a series of six work books/modules covering Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. The knowledge audit suggests what religions need to be studied which the tutor then recommends. Each module has a self assessment that your tutor will review and offer feedback. There is a £25 registration fee and a fee of £25 per module, with a £25 discount if all 6 courses are purchased. See the website for more details.
